Where can you turn if you have a complaint? Who can help you to solve your consumer problem? When do the consumer protection authority and the arbitration board act?
The first step is to try to resolve the dispute directly with the business.
If this does not work:
- Contact the consumer protection authority, which has general powers to check that businesses are complying with consumer protection rules.
- For specific questions, please contact one of the competent authorities, for example:
o in matters relating to communications services, media services, postal services, to the National Media and Infocommunications Authority,
o for the notification of unfair and deceptive commercial practices that may affect economic competition, to the Hungarian Competition Authority,
o with financial complaints to the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (the central bank of Hungary),
o the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority in public service cases, but if a complaint arises as a residential consumer regarding billing, accounting or metering and is not handled properly by the service provider, the consumer protection authority may be initiated.
- In individual disputes (for example, a warranty claim for a defective product), we recommend using the arbitration body instead of going to court, which will help you settle the dispute quickly and free of charge. Arbitration bodies not only resolve disputes, they also provide advice: consumers and even businesses can ask them for advice on consumer protection issues.
In addition to public authorities and arbitration bodies, consumer associations are also important players in consumer protection. Several associations offer free advice and receive consumer questions and complaints by phone and e-mail.
