The purpose of the reduced pack sizes database managed by the National Authority for Trade and Consumer Protection (NATCP) is to provide consumers with an easily accessible, reliable and continuously updated source of information on products that have been reduced in size.
According to the relevant government decree, if a product is placed on the market in a new, smaller packaging (in particular, of smaller weight or volume), the trader is obliged to display information about the product concerned in a form and content specified by the Minister responsible for trade, which is clearly visible to consumers, for two months from the date the product is first placed on the market.
The legislation also clarifies the responsibilities of producers and traders. In the case of Hungarian production, the manufacturer, or in other cases the first distributor or wholesaler in Hungary, must inform the trader in writing of the reduction in packaging and the possible withdrawal of previous packaging when the product concerned is first sold. At the same time, they must also send a notification to the NATCP with the same content.
Domestic regulation on packaging reduction is exemplary at international level, as confirmed by the DLA Piper international report.
The packaging reduction database, which is available on the NATCP website (www.nkfh.gov.hu), supports transparency, informed consumer choice and traceability of commercial practices.
The NATCP remains committed to the use of modern digital solutions and to promoting informed consumption and encourages all stakeholders, whether consumers or businesses, to actively use the database.
