In the year 2025, the EU product safety alert system registered a total of 4,671 warnings, more than ever before. In 2025, the Hungarian authorities sent alerts about 317 dangerous products to the Safety Gate system, placing Hungary in 6th place among European countries, surpassing countries such as Poland, Austria, and Romania.
Safety Gate is a rapid alert system operated by the European Union that enables the rapid sharing of information on dangerous non-food products among member states. Thanks to this, national authorities – including Hungarian market supervision authorities – are able to intervene quickly to protect consumers.
Of the Hungarian alerts submitted in 2025, 51% concerned cosmetics that were classified as dangerous due to the presence of BMHCA, which has been banned since March 2022. The toxic substance BMHCA can cause skin sensitization, damage the reproductive system, and harm the health of unborn children. This was followed by decorative lighting strings (22%), which posed a risk of electric shock and burns.
In the third place are toys (14.5%), where easily detached components or, in the case of stuffed toys, access to the stuffing material can cause a choking hazard. The electrical appliances covered by the notification, such as hair dryers, extension cords, and USB chargers, have been banned due to the risk of electric shock and burns.
The inspection of products originating from third countries is a key priority of the 7-point consumer protection action plan announced last autumn. The NATCP and the government agencies under its professional supervision will continue to take decisive action to ensure consumer safety and will take the necessary official measures to remove dangerous products from the market.
